Home Guide for Worship
March 29, 2020

Seven Hills Fellowship

Dear church,

Hopefully you are settling into a rhythm of worshiping the Lord on Sundays by thoughtfully participating in this home worship guide. It’s okay if it still feels a bit odd, that’s to be expected. While the method is different, the message is the same: God wants us to draw near to him as to a good father, be washed clean by Christ like muddy kids at the water hose, and to live clean and changed lives in the world by his Spirit’s power.

In Matthew’s gospel Jesus had a lot to say about trusting yourself vs. trusting the Lord. The religious leaders were trusting their own righteousness as they had come to define it and the wealthy were trusting in their own means to provide for themselves. This is the context for Jesus’ words which call us to worship now.

(Feel free to read all readings and prayers out loud as well as sing along with the recordings.)

Call to Worship: Matthew 6:27-33

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Lord, we know this is your world and that you care for us. We are here to seek first your kingdom and righteousness. Amen.

Prayer: Isaiah 1:16-20
(The non-bold text is from Isaiah and the bold text is our prayer in response. Feel free to not rush this section. These exhortations from Isaiah are not quickly recognized or applied.)

16 Wash yourselves;
We wash in Christ’s words, believed and applied.
make yourselves clean;
We are cleansed by God’s grace through faith in his Son.
remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;
Show us what evil deeds remain in our hearts, homes and communities and we will remove them.
cease to do evil,
Grant us faith to confess our sins to one another and help each other turn from them.
17 learn to do good;
Teach us, train us, that we may exercise good works.
seek justice,
Enable us with compassion for those who are wronged.
correct oppression;
Give us the boldness required to challenge oppressors.
bring justice to the fatherless,
Grant us favor with those whose fathers are absent.
plead the widow’s cause.
Help us to help singles, single parents, and all those who are isolated, anxious or vulnerable.
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;
20 but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
We hear you and we believe you, Sovereign Lord.
All glory be to you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Closing Scripture: Romans 11:33-36
(You may raise your hands if you wish.)

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
“For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?”
“Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
